Ah I have never felt so disappointed in a movie before. The movie its self was good, it was well developed and the casting was great...except for the main character. (Don't get me wrong - he was a brilliant actor and very attractive but he looked 19 or 20 while his friends looked like the ages they were supposed to be.)
In relation to the book...I died inside. It wasn't that bad at first but it went down hill as the plot progressed.
Lists are good.
A few* things about the movie:
1.) They made Henri's and 4's relationship very shallow. In the book there were scenes from the past on Lorien that provided a connection to the two but in the movie the only "vision" Four has was of Three's death...(that vision didn't even happen). So when Henri did die, it was in the wrong place at the wrong time and the emotion wasn't there for me. The book portrayed Henri and a loving fatherly figure who wished Four to go to school, who hugged Four instead of throwing a hunk of wood at his head, who took time to train and talk to him. He was stern with Four without being so harsh. In the movie he seemed cold, distant and controlling. I do like the person that they casted for Henri though.
2.) The chest! The freaking chest. Was no chest. In the movie it was a box. -_- The items inside the chest were not shown either. (The healing stone, the Loric Salt, the solar system etc..)
3.) The movie showed none of the training between Henri and Four. They even gave one of Four's legacies to Six. Ugh. The training also included the visions of Lorien to Four so the fact they left that factor out just undermines Four's determination to save the Earth and for his reason to live. After I watched the movie I had to get Four's legacies straight in my mind : Lumen (including resistance to fire), talking to animals, telekinesis. As I said earlier, Four looked much older than 15 years old. He looked like a Senior/ Graduate - not a Sophomore.
4.) Six. Was blonde and tall. For shame. The movie did do a good job at showing Six was trying to track Four down though. The only Legacy that Six had that was shown in the book was her invisibility and her telekinesis. No fireproof-ness. Rawr.
5.) I felt the relationship between Sarah and Four was well represented. I actually feel like that's what the movie was really about - not about Lorien or defeating the Mogadorians but about Sarah. Which worked well but it was a little more balanced in the book. The casting was also done well with this character.
6.) Sam! Although I imagined Sam a little scrawnier and maybe a bit more awkward I loved how they presented him. The relationship to Sam's father and the Legacies was a twist that kind of changed the plot. Maybe there really is a connection that I haven't read about yet (still on chapter five in "The Power of Six"). But in the first book that connection wasn't there and in the movie it makes the relationship between Four and Sam more like...not best friends but people who are essential to each other. Their friendship wasn't as well developed as it was in the book.
7.) Mark James did look like an ass hole - just not like the ass hole in the book. Kind of the opposite really but that's okay. The rivalry between Four and Mark was somewhat shown but in the beginning Mark tried to be kind of nice in a jerk way. (Make sense?) That fake kind of nice that you know could turn into something dangerous. The movie didn't show Mark's house catching on fire or show that Mark helped save Four's life in the end. There was a party and Four did save Sarah - just not in the way you would think.
8.) The Mogadorians were not that scary in the movie. The tension that was formed in the book didn't really show up. You knew they were the "bad guys" and that they were to be feared but the mood that came along with the description wasn't there. Plus the scene where Four and Sam go to that house has many things wrong with it. (A list inside of a list...) In the book:
-The Mogadorians did NOT show up and attack Four, Sam and Henri. They did show up however, but the group got away. (This also means that Henri didn't die there.)
- They were supposed to be in Athens, Ohio. Not somewhere in Indiana. I have been to Athens to visit OU and I was pretty excited to see the scene take place there - except it didn't happen.
-Three guys not two.
- This is where Sam finds out about Four's capabilities.
9.) Bernie Kosar. :'D This is where I am very proud of the movie. I was terrified they would have left him out. But they proved to be an alright group of people by including him.
10.) The events that happened in the book are mostly there but are changed and out of order.
*a few obviously means ten.
My rant is finished for now. I have more to say but the thoughts that I have already typed are really jumbled and probably don't make much sense. Sorry if I spoiled anything, and sorry if I seem to critical. I am really observant and notice things that many people don't catch. I tried to leave small detail out though. =D haha...
Have a good night.
